Old Fashioned Tattoo Aftercare

Taking care of a fresh tattoo is crucial to ensure proper healing and to maintain the integrity of the artwork. Here are comprehensive aftercare instructions for those healing their tattoos without adhesive bandages.

Initial Care

  1. Listen to Your Tattoo Artist: Follow any specific instructions they provide, as they may have tailored advice based on your tattoo's location and their personal experience.
  2. Leave the Bandage On: Keep the protective wrapping on your tattoo for the first 2-3 hours. Some artists suggest leaving it on overnight or up to 24 hours if you are not in a clean environment to remove it.
  3. Remove the Bandage: Gently take off the bandage and wash the tattoo with an antibacterial liquid soap (e.g., Dial, Dr. Bronner’s). Use warm water and mild soap to clean the area thoroughly, removing any fluid residue.
  4. Dry the Tattoo: Pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Do not rub the area.

Ongoing Care

  1. Apply Lotion: After the initial drying period, start applying a clean, unscented, hypoallergenic salve or lotion. Recommended brands include CETAPHIL, Burt’s Bees, or Aveeno. Avoid using products like Aquaphor that can trap moisture.
  2. Frequency of Washing and Moisturizing: Wash the tattoo approximately 2-4 times a day for the first week or until it starts peeling. After each wash, apply a thin layer of lotion. Less is more; avoid over-moisturizing.
  3. Address Itching and Peeling: It is normal for the tattoo to peel and itch. Do not pick or scratch the tattoo, as this can lead to pigment loss and potential scarring.
  4. Keep It Clean: Always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo. Continue this routine for a minimum of two weeks, but ideally for the entire first month of healing.

Additional Tips

  1. Avoid Sun Exposure: Keep your tattoo out of direct sunlight for at least one month. After this period, always apply sunscreen to protect your tattoo.
  2. Avoid Water Submersion: Do not soak your tattoo in water (e.g., swimming pools, hot tubs, bathtubs) for 2-3 weeks or until it is fully healed.
  3. Wear Loose Clothing: Wear loose-fitting clothes to avoid friction and irritation on the tattooed area.
  4. Monitor Healing: During the healing process, your tattoo may look shiny, silvery, or a bit milky. This is normal. Patience is key.
  5. Contact Your Artist: If you have any questions or concerns during the healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your tattoo artist. Sending a picture can help them provide you with specific advice.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your tattoo heals properly and looks its best. Happy healing!
