Tattoo Aftercare With Adhesive Bandages

Comprehensive Guide to Tattoo Aftercare with Adhesive Bandages

Getting a new tattoo is an exciting experience, but proper aftercare is crucial to ensure that your tattoo heals well and looks its best. This guide combines the best practices from multiple sources to provide you with a comprehensive set of instructions for taking care of your fresh tattoo, especially if you are using an adhesive bandage like Second Skin or Saniderm.

Leave Adhesive Bandage On For
24 Hours Up To 3 Days

  • First 24 Hours: Leave the bandage applied at your appointment on for at least 24 hours. This bandage is see-through, so you will notice fluids (mostly plasma, excess ink, and blood) pooling under it. This is completely normal.
  • Up to 3 Days: If the bandage remains intact and there are no signs of leakage or significant discomfort, you can leave it on for up to 3 days. However, if it begins to leak or any part of the tattoo is exposed, remove it as soon as you can shower and clean it thoroughly.

Fluid Buildup Under The Bandage Is Normal

  • Normal Fluid Production: Your tattoo will naturally produce fluid, which may look gross but is perfectly normal. This fluid can be tinged with the colors used in the tattoo, usually mixing into a brownish hue.
  • When to Remove: Use your own judgment to determine when to remove the bandage based on fluid buildup. If there is an excessive amount of liquid under the bandage, it’s best to remove it.

How to Remove the Adhesive Bandage:

  • In the Shower: The best way to remove the adhesive bandage is in the shower with hot, soapy water. This helps loosen the adhesive and makes removal easier.
  • Peel Slowly: Start by peeling up a corner of the bandage and then slowly and gently use a wet, soapy washcloth to help roll the bandage down off the skin. This helps separate the skin from the bandage without causing damage.

Cleaning the Tattoo After Removing The Second Skin

  • Sanitize: Wash your hands thoroughly before touching your tattoo.
  • Initial Cleaning: Once the bandage is removed, wash the tattoo thoroughly using plain antibacterial liquid soap (like Dial or Dr. Bronner’s). It may take two or three full applications of soap and rinsing to remove all fluid residue.
  • Pat Dry: After washing, gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean towel or let it air dry. Avoid using the same towel repeatedly.

Continued Cleaning

  • Frequency: Wash your tattoo approximately 2-4 times a day, especially if it comes in contact with dirt, sweat, or germs. Continue this routine for the first week or until the tattoo starts peeling.
  • Attention to Detail: Pay close attention to the tattoo for a day or two after removing the bandage. Wash it morning and evening and allow it to air dry for 10-15 minutes after washing.

Moisturizing Your New Tattoo

Applying a Lotion or Salve

  • Initial Application: After washing your tattoo and letting it completely dry, apply a clean, unscented, uncolored, hypoallergenic salve or lotion. Spread it thinly across the whole tattoo.
  • Frequency: Use the salve or lotion sparingly after washing or whenever the tattoo itches, feels dry, or looks dry. Be mindful of over-moisturizing.

General Aftercare Tips

  • Avoid Itching and Picking: Do not pick at your tattoo even if it starts peeling or becomes scabby. Let the dead skin slough off naturally.
  • Avoid Swimming and Sunlight: Avoid standing water (no swimming or baths) and direct sunlight or tanning for at least two weeks. If you’re going to be out in the sun, cover your tattoo with something clean.
  • Use Approved Products: Only use fragrance-free lotions such as Aveeno, Lubriderm, or Curel, or approved tattoo ointments like Redemption or Hustle Butter. Avoid using Neosporin, A&D ointment, Vaseline, or random products found online.

Proper aftercare can make a significant difference in the final appearance of your tattoo.

Tattoo aftercare is essential for ensuring that your new tattoo heals properly and looks great for years to come. Follow these instructions carefully, and if any issues arise, do not hesitate to contact your tattoo artist or physician. By following these guidelines, you’ll help your tattoo heal beautifully and maintain its vibrant colors and sharp lines. Happy healing!
